Shot from directly above, which is the only angle that makes sense for a pot. You lose the steam and the depth, and you get everything laid out flat like a map.
Wide stainless pan, sitting on a gas burner, the lid pushed off to the top left corner with just its black speckled handle in the frame. The steel catches the kitchen light along the top rim and goes a soft milky grey where it curves down. Two riveted handles, one at the top and one at the bottom, both slightly out of the picture. Pale tile behind it.
Inside, the pot has been loaded in sections rather than stirred, and that's what makes it worth photographing.
The whole left third is poached chicken, pulled apart by hand into long soft strips. Pale, almost grey-pink, no browning anywhere on it, no sear, no colour from the pan. It's been cooked in liquid and torn, and the strands still hold the shape of the muscle they came from. A few smaller shreds have been scattered out across the middle and right, so the white shows up in three or four places instead of sitting in one lump.
Everything else is peppers and herbs. Red strips mostly, cut lengthways, some of them still glossy and firm and holding their edge, others gone soft and darker where they've been sitting in the heat longer. A few orange and yellow pieces underneath, mushroom caps collapsed down into the liquid at the bottom right, what looks like onion or shallot gone translucent in the gaps. One thin lemon slice at the right edge with its rind still on, and another buried down at the bottom.
Then the herbs, and there are a lot of them. Broad flat leaves in some places, something much finer and more feathery in others, both chopped rough with stems left in and tipped over the top in handfuls after the cooking was mostly done. They've wilted on contact and gone dark and slick where they touched the hot liquid, and they're still bright and raw where they landed on top of a pepper.
Down at the bottom of everything there's a shallow amount of liquid, brownish and thin, catching light between the pieces. Not a sauce. Just what came out of the chicken and the vegetables while they sat there.
It doesn't look finished. It looks like something forty seconds away from the lid going back on.
